Why does Chrome import Firefox's history and if I delete it in Chrome, will it be gone in Firefox too?
I just wanted to try Chrome and without any prompt during install, my Firefox's entire history is in Chrome when I opened it up........surely this isn't right.
And if I deleted this history in Chrome, would I be deleting it for Firefox too?

No, deleting data from Chrome doesn't delete it from Firefox.
You'd have to ask Google why they go about it that way. Presumably they want to simplify switching to their browser.
If you're actually asking why Chrome was able to import your data, it's because only your passwords are encrypted (assuming you've set a master password). Any program you've installed can access the rest of your data, same as Firefox can. And conversely, Firefox is able to import data from Chrome and other browsers.
