how do i go back to the new tab interface with pinned sites in the current tab

after surfing, i'd like to go back to where i began - the very beginning, as though i just opened the tab where i can see my pinned sites. is this possible in the current tab?

It would be easier to go forward, i.e., type or paste or click a bookmark for about:newtab (the 9-thumbnail page). The reason I suggest that is that when you load the first page in a new tab, it "replaces" the new tab page so there's no way to go back to it.
