my emails show as unread, even when I haven't been on them. can this be changed?

THEY ARE DEFINITELY SHOWING AS READ, AS SOON AS THEY COME INTO MY INBOX. I HAD ABOUT 8 MESSAGES THIS MORNING, THEY ALL SHOW AS PALE, NOT BOLD, TEXT, SO LOOK AS IF THEY HAVE BEEN READ ALREADY. DISPLAY SETTINGS IS SET TO MARK AS READ AFTER DISPLAYING FOR 5 SECONDS, BUT I HAVE TRIED VARIOUS OPTIONS AND NONE WORK! ANY HELP WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED

if you have not been "on them" I would expect them to show as unread. Given you have not seen them yet.
