I have used Thunderbird for years without any problem until a few days ago when it stopped connecting to the Virginmedia servers. Virginmedia assure me that everything is working fine at their end. I run Avast anti-virus and have tried disabling that but still Thunderbird cannot connect to the email servers. In case Thunderbird had become corrupted I uninstalled, removed my profile file and installed the latest version of Thunderbird. When I try to set up a new account Thunderbird tells me it cannot find the settings for my email account whether I select POP or IMAP. The server settings are the same as those given by Virginmedia.

My GMX account lets me collect emails from other accounts and I receive emails from my Virgin accounts without any trouble so I don't understand why I suddenly have problems with Thunderbird. Can anyone offer any help?

Problem solved.

My software firewall had blocked Thunderbird for some reason.
