Version 46 and 47 do not work on my Win XP computer. Why?

I have tried installing v46.0 & v47.0.1 and the install appears to run with no problem, but when I open Firefox, I get no home page, no previous tabs, nothing. Just an "egg timer" like it is working. Even after 10 minutes, nothing at all. I have re-installed v45.0. I am running Win XP with up-to-date service packs on a Dell computer. Sheila

If no one can answer this question, can anyone tell me how to disable the nag screen to install V 47.1. It's driving me crazy!

Hello, sorry for the delay in replying.

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem. Thank you!

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

So I need to install V47.1 and then try the Firefox safe mode??

You can do a custom install in another program folder or rename the current Firefox program folder to make it possible to revert to the version that works.

Did you try Firefox Safe Mode?

You can try temporarily disabling all your add-ons - Add-ons Manager (Ctrl+Shift+A) > Extensions, then see if you can update Firefox. If you can, re-enable them one by one until you find the culprit(s).

Firefox 43.0.1 is served to WinXP users on www.mozilla.org and www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ simply because many WinXP users are still using SP2 and not SP3. The 43.0.2 and newer is signed due to Microsoft requirments and WinXP SP3 users can install 43.0.2 and newer including 47.0.1 setups but not SP2 users.
