My email won't send messages, intermittently...

Help! I have gremlins!

If I have content in the body of an email, it won't send. I've also not received emails from people from time to time, I think.

I can send/receive/forward messages with nothing in the body. Thunderbird consistently believes it's sending messages... I even have a time stamp affirming the time a message was sent.

Other relevant details: - My settings are correct; - My ISP operates fine; they claim it's not on their end. - I can forward messages, as long as I don't write in the message field. - Someone helped me uninstall/reinstall Thunderbird and migrate my email. That seemed to solve the problem for much of today, 8 hours later, the same issue has come up. - We ran some antivirus software already.

It's almost like there's a quiescent virus that got disturbed by the end of the day. Is that possible?

OK, I'll shut up and await your genius help!

Thank you so much! This is making me crazy....

What is your anti-virus software?

ugh... someone helped me, i think one was avast. and there were two other programs that someone helped me download from the web. one found 3 viruses. Does that help a little??

having more than one anti virus program almost always makes your computer act like it has a virus as the multiple anti virus programs fight.

They also make mail and web browsing at best extremely unreliable.

interesting. however, this problem preceded avast, i think. i was fighting with it all day yesterday, and it was only in the evening that my friend installed avast. thunderbird worked well for 8 hours today after avast, but then reverted to the original problem that originated pre-avast.

other ideas?

to respond to matt:

all the antivirus activity was in response to the original thunderbird problem, actually....

Are you posting to this forum from a different computer than the one with the problem? What's the OS of the computer with the problem? It usually helps stating that in the OP in the first place.

however, this problem preceded avast,

I suppose there was another anti-virus software running on the computer before, which (hopefully) got removed prior to installing Avast. So it's possible this is the exact same problem as before.

Did you follow the suggestions from the Avast article?

Hi,

Yes, I am posting from the same computer with the problem: I have OS X Yosemite, 10.10.5

I did not have different anti-virus software running earlier. I am not the most computer literate person in the world. And I've been under the (mistaken) impression that Macs are relatively immune to most of the nasty stuff out there.

I did not yet follow the Avast instructions. I can do that, to be sure, but it seemed like it might not be the answer, given that my problem preceded Avast and then returned in its exact same guise after Avast.

Thank you so much for your continued help. At this point, I've successfully configured Outlook to receive my email, as a stopgap. I would love to import my existing email and folders from Thunderbird, if I can't get T'bird to work again.

OK, my turn to try the Avast instructions.... Thanks. More in a bit....

ok, weird, now it's working. no additional fixes from me. after it started working, i also disabled the mail scanner part of avast, but there's just no way that can be the problem, given the timeline.

this is what happened yesterday, too. thunderbird worked perfectly starting in the AM and then by 4:30 PM, it stopped sending messages w/ content.

other ideas? i'm going to go with it for now, because it's working. we'll see what happens in a few hours....
