How do I install Thunderbird on Windows 10? It keeps failing--file won't open.

I have downloaded files for both Thunderbird 38 exe and application files). Neither worked. In both cases, when I click on the application file, I get a message that it can't open/run on this system, "this app can't run on your PC". I also got other error messages, including that the file can't open
