The "contact" and "List" buttons are gray and I cannot add a new contact or list
I went to add someone to my contact list and that "button" is gray now, as is the "list" button. So I am unable to add anyone to my contacts or create a new list.

Have you selected an address book from the Directory Pane on the left side of the address book window? If you are on All Books that is the problem.
