Thunderbird 31 won't download messages from pop server (vers 24 worked fine) CAUSED by Avast

more options

Since Tbird updated to version 31, it won't download messages from my POP server. I can send, but not download messages. I restored Win (7) back to a previous date to go back to Tbird version 24, and everything worked OK.

Tbird later auto-updated itself (ugh!) back to vers 31, and here we go again, no emails downloading. I changed the settings in Win firewall, even tried turning that off completely to test, with no difference. Retarted Tbird and Win repeatedly, no go. This is extremely frustrating. Does anyone actually *test* software updates before releasing them these days?!

Tbird works fine for me in Linux Mint 16, but this glitch under Win 7 just popped up with the upgrade to 31.

Thanks for any suggestions you can offer!

Chosen solution

typical suspects are AV and firewall software.

Start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled - win7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

Still In Windows safe mode, start thunderbird in safe mode - http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/safe-mode

Does problem go away?

Many thanks, Wayne, you were dead-on! It was my antivirus, scanning incoming mail. Not sure why Tbird 31 doesn't play well with Avast, but we' re back up and running again.

Thanks very much, I really appreciate the help!
