My old e-mail program had lines separating each of the messages listed in the Inbox. Is this feature available with Thunderbird? Thanks!

try Zebra stripping... it is better than lines really with each alternating row a slightly different background colour. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Zebra_striping

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply! It sounds like a great idea, but I'm having trouble finding the place to paste the code. Can you advise on that?

you will have trouble as they do not exist until you create them Tthe chrome folder will not exist in your profile, nor will the userchrome.CSS file.

Windows explorer will make short work of creating a folder, and the other is paste into notepad and save as userchrome.css in the chrome folder.

If you have trouble locating your profile, go to Troubleshooting information on the help menu and click the show folder button.
