bookmark button does not work and bookmarks have dissapeared

i have tried everything from system restore to installing and uninstalling firefox i am currently running 3.6.16 and have checked for updates (which it did) i will not upgrade to versoin 4 as it wont recognize norton protection ~ i had it but uninstalled it i do not like that version ~ this came on in a blink of an eye ~ i was on line and it was working fine clicked it off ~opened back up at a later time 9 about 30 minutes) and went to bookmark a website and poof it just doesnt work at all ~ any help on this matter would be of great help as there is NOTHING YOUR SUPPORT PAGE THAT WILL FIX THIS TRUST ME!!!!!!!

This can be caused by a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
