After a while, Firefox 3.6.10 on Mac just stops working

This has been happening for some time, across several Firefox upgrades, but seems to be getting worse and worse.

The symptoms are consistent: I can browse for a time but eventually Firefox stops being able to browse on newly-opened tabs. Older tabs will on occasion continue to support browsing. Killing Firefox and restarting fixes the problem, if that can be called a fix.

I suspected Flash (after some reading of old posts on similar symptoms) but have had this happen when I have not run Flash in a session. As I am constantly killing and restarting Firefox these days, I can be fairly clear when a session is Flash-free.

One possible lead I have is that this appears to happen whenever ANY plugin receives an update notification, but this may just be co-incidence.

One more detail: I am running on a Macbook Pro, and this is particularly the case if I close the notebook and then try to continue browsing at a later time. Every single session fails to be continuable after sleep, and this was not the case until recently (latest Firefox upgrade).
