I miss the feature "Automatically mark message as read when opened" as was found in Eudora

I know the Thunderbird shows the message when you select it. And then, it marks the message is being read. And that is exactly the problem. I only wish the message to be marked as being read when I double click the message (open it). Just like was the case in Eudora.

This question has already been asked in another thread in 2015... But that thread is closed. I just want to indicate that there are still people who miss this feature in Thunderbird. It would be very easy to add this option: "Automatically mark message as read... After it is opened" Why not do it?

The answer has not changed over the years. You have seen the mail, be it in the window, a tab or the reading pane, it is read. Turn off the message reading pane (f8) will reduce the chance of a message being marked as read to the other two options.

That will not be changing, despite folks having the misconception that there is a preview pane, such a thing does not exist.

It is a pity that the Thunderbird developers do not see the use of this option. There are a lot of threads asking for this feature:

Moreover, the feature WAS available in Eudora. I hope you will not again start about that there is no preview-panel matt......... We are no talking about the preview-panel.

Again, in Eudora, a message will only be marked 'read' after it has been opened.... Pfff... Matt, I'm so afraid that you again will start about the preview-panel, as an excuse to accuse me that I'm looking for a feature that does not exist....

Wow, Searching some more, I found this post from e.r.n.i.e....... It is possible afterall, but only if you open messages in a window, not in a tab....

Seriously. if you open an email you have read it. That is the universal method of looking at it these days. I am not going to talk about a preview pane because apparently that does not resonate with you. But trying to make a distinction between opening and reading is really just something Eudora users would care about, people still used to doing things a twenty year old way. It dates from a time when people got three emails a week and each contained something useful. I have over 9,000 in my inbox I have never even opened. So really trying to split them another way is pointless in my world.
