How do I change the message header pane scrolling from a minimum of 3 lines to allowing 1 line at a time?

Having the message headers jump at 3 lines at a time is hard to control, especially when I scroll with the touchpad where it is hard to get exactly one "click". So often I have no idea whether I have skipped entire sections of emails. I want to scroll one line at a time in the header pane. I am using Thunderbird 52.4.0 and Ubuntu 16.4. I have already used Firefox about:config to change mousewheel.min_line_scroll_amount and toolkit.scrollbox.verticalScrollDistance, but it doesn't have any effect. I have looked for a setting in Ubuntu, but there isn't any that I can find. Changing the general mouse and touchpad pointer speeds also have no effect.

Thanks for your help.

Firefox and Thunderbird are separate programs. There's no reason why making adjustments in Firefox would affect Thunderbird.

Tools|Options|Advanced|General→Config Editor gets you to Thunderbird's equivalent of Firefox's about:config

I copied mousewheel.min_line_scroll into the search box and got a near miss. Hopefully that will be of use to you.
