Type about:preferences#general<enter> in the address bar.

There are two settings;

  • When Firefox Starts

When the browser is started, what do you want to display. Many of us choose Show My Home Page.

  • Home Page

When a new page is opened, what do you want displayed.

  1. Use Current Page. Use what ever page(s) are open at that time.
  2. Use Bookmark
  3. Restore To Default. about:home shows a Mozilla home page with tools.

You can use any of these that you wish;

about:home (Firefox default home page), about:newtab (shows the sites most visited), about:blank (a blank page),

or you can enter any web page or about: page you want.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode (Never remember history).

In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" or otherwise clear history.

  • do not clear the Browsing History
  • Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, passwords, and other website specific data.

I tried the above suggestions the best I could and still unresolved. now I get the firefox start page with options on the right not the restore I used to see on my previous computer. In history the option of restoring remains unavailable. I forgot to say history is only kept or 1 day and that is also strange

???????????????????????

You may have corrupt sessionstore file(s).

Type about:support in the address bar and press enter.

Under the page logo on the left side you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To it’s right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

Locate the sessionstore file(s). Then rename or delete them. Restart Firefox.

I now see restore session in history THANKS Not sure yet that restore will show right when I login I just changed 1 setting I meant to say that my history only shows for 1 day. no more 1 week available the choice for 1 week I was used to is no longer avail...

If you use cleanup software like CCleaner then check the settings for the Firefox application.

good point I haven't used CCleaner settings for History? where?

To FredMcD I had to do what you suggested again after restarting my computer: restore ss was no longer avail in history. I hope it sticks this time

FredMcD, every time I restart my computer restore session is no longer highlighted in history and of course doesn't show on the opening page like I had before getting windows 10 This is what I really want: had it in windows XP and 7 on previous computer... not sure how since my old tech helper retired should I have "show my home page selected in Options -> general? oops I just read that was wrong so it is reset to "show windows and tabs from last time" I put about:newtabs in my home page but it didn't help so I move back to default

still can't get session restore either on the opening page (I only have options as choice on bottom right) or in history (no longer highlighted in history after 2nd restart) AND even though settings are correct in history settings (remember all history ) only 1 day is available with week or month not even appearing as options. Clicking on ALL makes no difference only current day shows

Okay, time to change course. What we will do is create a new user profile.

First; open your file browser to the current profile;

Type about:support in the address bar and press enter.

Under the page logo on the left side you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To it’s right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

Place the file manager window out of the way.

Follow the instructions in this link to create a new profile. Do Not do anything to the new profile until you are told.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles

Once the new, blank profile is set up, do as instructed above to open another file manager for the new profile. Once again, Close Firefox.

Warning ! ! Only Copy the files you are told. We will avoid anything that might be the cause of your problems. Here is the list of files;

cookies: Do not bother. Cookies will be created when you return to the web site. However, you will have to log in everywhere.

extensions(add-ons): it would be better to download them fresh. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ key3.db and logins.json: These are the Password files.

persdict.dat: custom dictionary – words you added to the dictionary

mimeTypes.rdf: What to do with what type of file.

places.sqlite: History and Bookmarks. Do not copy this file at this time

prefs.js: Your settings. Note, this may be contaminated.

Copy these files from the old to the new. You will get a message about the files already exist. Choose to over-write for each file.

Does Firefox create a sessionstore.js file in the Firefox profile folder when you close Firefox?

Firefox uses sessionstore.js file in the profile folder to store session data, but this file is only present when Firefox is closed. The sessionstore.js file is created from recovery.js when you close Firefox and is removed and copied to previous.js when you start Firefox to make is possible to restore the session at any time.

You can backup the session files in the sessionstore-backups folder in the Firefox Profile Folder to make sure not to lose possible important session data. You can find these files in the sessionstore-backups folder:

previous.js (cleanBackup: copy of sessionstore.js from previous session that was loaded successfully)
recovery.js (latest version of the sessionstore written during runtime)
recovery.bak (previous version of the sessionstore written during runtime)
upgrade.js-<build_id> (backup created during an upgrade of Firefox)

You can copy a file from the sessionstore-backups folder to the main profile and rename the file to sessionstore.js to replace the current file (make a backup copy of the current sessionstore.js).

FredMcD thanx: (Cor-el this would be well above my level thx though) wow this is extremely complicated for me but i started and created a new profile made sure firefox started in the new profile by clicking on it but it obviously starts in the old profile and the file folder I open is clearly the old one with my addons, previous restores etc... Went back a cple times to make sure... Stuck Then btw I would have no idea how to copy files feeling like simply refreshing firefox... I am too old for this...
