It seems like I have been hacked. I am receiving tons of 'unable to send' emails that I never sent out in the first place. I can see these are weird addresses that I supposedly tried to send these emails to. What should I do? My email is run through my website. I changed the password through there today, but I am still receiving these emails.

What should I do and how do I change my password on my Thunderbird email?

Thank you

I can understand your situation as it has happened to me in the past. Someone is using your email address to spam people. They may have got your email address from any public forum which you chose to publicly display your email address, hence why your email address was removed from this question to protect your privacy, but not all websites do this.

Usually, it is more of an iritation than a threat. But, as you do not know how they got the email address, I would advise you start up your computer in Safe Mode and run a full computer scan just in case they managed to put malware on your computer and are able to read your keystrokes.

Then, if nothing was found you are ok, but if something was detected and removed by anti-virus software, I would reset passwords again, just in case they managed to read your keystrokes.

Do not respond to any of these emails as this only confirms to them that it is a good and live email address. Eventually, they give up if they get no responses.

I created a personal signature for all my outgoing mail so that my contacts know the email was from me. Then I sent an email to my contacts stating that someone was abusing my email address and appologies for any inconvenience. I advised them that in future they would know if it was an email from me if the signature was in the email and also advised not to respond to the bogus emails.

Here is some info on creating html signature for emails.

Thanks, I have this issue also. I have also started to get several of the old "African banker looking to invest millions" scam emails daily. Any thoughts on how to stop those?

Make sure your Junk Controls are set up correctly. see info at these links:

Then, mark the email as 'Junk'. If your Junk controls have been set up correctly, marking as Junk will move that email into the Junk Folder and will start to train the Junk Controls to recognise those types of email and auto move them to the Junk folder.

Then, after a couple of days, check the Junk folder to make sure it does not contain any good emails. If you find a good email, then mark as 'not junk' which will move it back to Inbox. You may need to do this a couple of times, but once the Junk controls recognise what is Junk then it becomes filtered automatically.

Periodically, empty the 'Junk' folder and compact the junk folder. Right click on Junk folder to see those options.
