Firefox window opens, but icon is not visible in my dock and menu bar does not show. I also cannot uninstall

Hello,

I think my Firefox program has been affected by a virus I picked up from a video converting website. Only Firefox has been affected.

When I click on the Firefox icon to open it, a window opens normally. However, no Firefox icon appears in my Dock and the menu bar does not appear as well. Also, the application does not appear in the "Force Quit" list.

Every once in a while some weird "Java" app opens and asks me to confirm something, but I just click cancel. It does not appear to be legitimately Java.

Finally, I cannot uninstall Firefox because when I try to drag and drop the icon from my applications folder to my trash, it says it cannot delete because the application is open. But it's not!

Please help me! Thank you

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:

Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

Please report back to see if this helped you!

Hello,

Thanks for the help. I re-installed Firefox and deleted the old corrupt version. At first it wouldn't let me, I'd get an error message saying it was open, but after deleting the "X509HostnameVerifeir.html" file, it let me delete it.

However now, when I try opening the new Firefox file, it says "A copy of Firefox is already open" and won't let me open it, even though I deleted the old version!
