When trying to go tools -> options my FF crashes, same happens when I try to download anything. Same happens when I run FF in safe mode, creating new profile, deleting any files in profile folder, uninstalling and installing FF = doesn't change anything. This happens with newest Firefox 17 and with Firefox 3.6 but DOES NOT happen in Firefox 2.0 (however I can not use that old browser because for some reason I can't import bookmarks from .json file). I searched whole web looking for solution, many people had the same problem and removing some program called Tortoise helped them, but I have never used that. I'm desparate cause I think after wasting so much time most people would just switch to other browser but I can't do that cause no other browser can recover my bookmarks from .json file.

hello camarpl, are there any crash reports showing up, that you could provide?

  1. Enter about:crashes in the Firefox location bar (that's where you enter your website names) and press Enter. You should now see a list of submitted crash reports.
  2. Copy the most recent 5 report IDs that you see in the crash report window and paste them into your forum response.

it says no crash reports has been sent, besides I just came up with solution, I downloaded Seamonkey 2.14 that's the only browser I know that is not Firefox and still can recover .json bookmarks, it will take time to download all addons and stuff but beside that it's almost the same, but still if somebody can make my firefox to work then i'd be grateful

Still repro'ing this crash in FF 20.0 on Win XP SP3. FF crashes on any attempt to invoke a SaveFileOpen dialog, or invoking Tools:Options dialog. In latter case Advanced tab is highlighted when Options dialog opens, but FF is crashed and doesn't respond. Must kill process to recover.

No extensions installed, uninstalled antivirus sw ESET NOD32 4.x, restarted, same crashes. Restarted FF in Safe Mode, same crashes.

No crash reports generated at all - about:crashes is blank.

wtf?

Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before reinstalling a fresh copy of Firefox.

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you will also lose your personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.

If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.
