how can I stop the Firefox pop-up update nag?

I uninstalled the awful FF 8.01 and do not want it until it is perfected. I'll decide when I want to update so I have automatic update disabled. I have pop-ups blocked but can find no way to stop this Firefox message. It doesn't happen every time I login but frequently enough to be annoying.. BTW I went back to FF 7 because FF 8 was slowing loading web pages to snails pace - 2 mins or more to load a page!!
