When search for something the search engine obviously gives a list of results. In the past you could view one then return to the search page and the one you just visited would be in a different colour. this has stopped working. How do I turn this back on?

Thanks Trev

Search results links in different colours:

That stopped working a long time ago. The problem is not Firefox itself, but Goggle and Mozilla among others using the same color (or almost indistinguishable colors)because their web page guys think it looks better than to follow standard practices. I would suggest installing the "Stylish" extension, and then either of the two styles listed. You can turn all styles or individual styles on/off with the toolbar button you can add through View > Toolbars > Customize after installing.

Please mark "Solved" one answer that will best help others with a similar problem -- hope this was it.

Also a lot of things will not work if you have changed your basic style.

Use Tools > Options > General > Colors -- You should have ...
  • Text: (Black), Background (White), Unvisited Links (Blue), Use system colors (unchecked), Visited Links (Red|Magenta|Maroon - to stand out from blue), Underline links (checked), and for "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above" (checked).

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Use_my_colors (you should allow pages to select their own colors, but be able to easily override them when necessary)

  • Custom Toolbar Buttons Maker select "Toggle Page Colors", install, move custom button to toolbar. Toggles preferences, removes some but not all images (loses the entire mozillaZine banner exactly same as the preference). Another button that can be included is "Page Fonts", which toggles page fonts between your colors and the web page's colors. Another button that may be needed to read some pages is "Toggle Styles" to toggle CSS styling off or back on.

I would suggest creating the customized buttons from the web page rather than the very large extension, both are by the same author so he won't be upset whichever you choose.

There are some additional suggestions in https://support.mozilla.com/questions/851009
