I get High Disk Usage alert and firefox.exe has 976mb of disk writing activity

Windows 7 w/ Firefox 6.0.2 - Once a week or so, I get a Norton Performance Alert showing High Disk Usage due to firefox.exe causing over 900mb of disk writing activity. During the process, my laptop is completely unresponsive for several minutes. Firefox is set not to update automatically. Cache is cleared often. Never more than 5 tabs open, usually 2 -3. Older Gateway laptop - 1.4 cpu, 2mb memory. Why is this happening and how do I rectify it?
