when I try to open Mozilla Firefox, the site comes up okay but everything is greyed out and it will not let me navigate anything such as favorites, typing in a url to try to search for a website, nothing. Over on the far left, right below the toolbar, are the words "untitled document" with a document symbol. I know that if I can get rid of this, firefox will load properly

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox without informing you about that, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox.
