When I try to use google street view in firefox v. 24 for linux, I get a balloon saying that I must have flash player 10 or higher. I tried to install the lastest version of flash. When I restarted firefox it said it was installing new plugins, so it seemed to notice that I had updated flash. But I still get the same message when trying to view content that requires flash plugin. I copied libflashplayer.so to every plugin directory that I could find on my system, but maybe I still don't have the right one. Where firefox expects to find plugins does not seem to be documented anywhere.

Note that a 32 bit Firefox version will require 32 bit versions of plugins, so make sure that you have the correct version.

Firefox also finds the Flash plugin for me as installed by the Flash installer rpm file

As an alternative you can install the Flash plugin (place a symlink) in your home directory /home/<user>/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so

You can try to delete the pluginreg.dat file in the Firefox Profile Folder and maybe addons.sqlite as well to reset the plugin registry databases.

See Re-initializing the plugins database:

Recent crashes of certain multimedia contents (this includes Youtube videos, certain flash games and other applications) in conjunction with Firefox are most probably caused by a recent Flash update and/or a malfunctioning browser plugin such as Real Player.

In order to remedy the problem, please perform the steps mentioned in these Knowledge Base articles:

This does not address my problem. Flash plugin is not crashing, it is failing to load. Adobe doesn't provide specific instructions about how to install flash on linux. I need to know in which directory firefox is looking for libflashplayer.so since it is not being found. Someone in Mozilla ought to know.

Thanks ideato. I checked that libflashplayer.so has been copied to all the plugin directories that were mentioned on that website. Yet when I go to about:plugins, I see that flash is not installed. Only adobe reader is installed, at /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/nppdf.so. I made sure that libflashplayer.so is also in that directory. I don't understand how to install it. I followed the directions in the readme file that came with the flash installation tarball for linux.

Hi Corel, you nailed the problem: 32-bit firefox versus 64-bit flash. As far as I can see, firefox automatically gives me 32 bit when I update it, while adobe detects my 64-bit architecture and automatically gives me that. I forced it to give me 32-bit and now it works. thanks!

Some sites need some settings in NoScript allowed. Other sites like pch.com still cannot detect player but work anyway.
