Address bar does not respond when typing URL and pressing enter. All other links are functioning well. I have used version 7, and upgrading to version 8 did not fix the problem

I had the same problem. I just unistalled digsby ask toolbar, and now it's working.

If you have "AVG Safe" or any other extension installed by "AVG Free" disable the extension, and follow the steps to remove the "Link Scanner" component from AVG during a reinstall -- see "Problematic extensions".
Probably not your problem but same areas:

I do not have AVG or AVG Free extension installed, nor do i have AVG installed on my computer...
