To edit the username and password for a server, right-click on the server's entry from the list and click Edit Username or Edit Password. all i see is copy.
instructions say to click "edit". I don't have edit. All I see is "copy", either username or password, and then at the bottom is "remove" account. This is via Thunderbird 24.2.0 on Ubuntu 12.10 (reason I'm here is distribution upgrade failed and that hosed email) Do I need to go to Linux system settings? That does not feel right.

Uninstalling thunderbird should only uninstall the program, it does not effect your profile. Did you get download from here: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/
Or here: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/60.0/
version 24.2 was released December 10, 2013 That old version does not have the 'Edit Password' option you are looking for. You would need to remove lines for password and restart thunderbird, then it should offer the prompt to enter password.
But I would update to a more recent version. backup your profile name folder if concerned.
Thank you for the quick response! I first installed Ubuntu in 2012? At that time I used the Ubuntu software installer. Since then it has magically updated over the years. On the last update Ubuntu advised doing a distro upgrade. I said yes, lots of messages flashed by about unavailable etc. a couple of hours later it said fail or something like that. I was able to reboot to previous. Went to software and tried to remove old thunderbird so I could reinstall. Click remove. Message flashes up saying must also remove 3 other packages. Ok. Click remove. Error message flashes up submit bug report. Ok. Did that many times. Looks like time to wipe the disk and start all over. Backup hundreds of gigs of music and pictures. Not fun. Is there a better way? First retry distro upgrade. How do I get back to that?
