My Firefox icon takes me to "myhomelinkonline.com" which doesn't look at all like Firefox. I'm a computer novice and if this is the new version of Firefox, I don't like it at all nor does it appear as user friendly.

Hi TLM1645, there are a number of possible reasons that your normal startup page might be replaced with a different page. Most of them indicate that unwanted software has entered your computer, so I suggest a little clean-up.

First, could you experiment and determine which of these are true:

(1) Every time you click the Home button on the toolbar, or launch a new window using Ctrl+n, you get the unwanted page. Your home page setting likely has been changed.

(2) You only get the unwanted page at startup or when you use your desktop shortcut for Firefox. Your shortcut likely has been hijacked.

(3) Even if you correct your home page (e.g., How to set the home page), the setting is ignored or gets reverted at the next startup.

Then: Here's my suggested procedure for tracking down and cleaning up bad add-ons and other hijackers. I know it seems long, but it's really not that bad.

(1) Open the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program. After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help in smoking out undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Be suspicious of everything you do not recognize/remember, as malware often uses important or innocent sounding names to discourage you from removing it. Take out as much trash as possible here. If in doubt, feel free to post a screen shot or list of questionable programs.

(2) Open Firefox's Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • in the Windows "Run" dialog, type or paste
    firefox.exe "about:addons"

In the left column, click Plugins. Set nonessential and unrecognized plugins to "Never Activate".

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible) unrecognized and unwanted extensions. All extensions are optional; the troublemaker might not be obvious from its name.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Any improvement?

(3) You can search for remaining issues with the scanning/cleaning tools listed in our support article: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware. These on-demand scanners are free and take considerable time to run. If they finish quickly and especially if they require payment, you may have a serious infection. I suggest the specialized forums listed in the article in that case.

Can you regain control of your Firefox?

You can check the target line in the Firefox desktop shortcut (right-click: Properties) to make sure nothing is appended after the path to the Firefox program.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
