I more commonly have issues with the screen scrolling, or the mouse cursor jumping

If that is a problem with a laptop that has a track pad instead of a mouse consider one of two related workarounds.

Disable the track pad temporarily. There is often a keyboard shortcut, specific to the laptop to toggle the trackpad on or off
Use a mouse. It is often easy to just plug in a USB mouse of use a wireless one.
