Sometimes web pages open in the Firefox sidebar. If you press Ctrl+b, is the left side replaced with Bookmarks -- in that case it's the sidebar -- or does yet a third pane open?

Pages can be directed to the sidebar by a bookmark. If you right-click the bookmark for the problem page and check its properties, you should see a checkbox you can clear.
