This morning I had 4 tabs open. I clicked to open a new tab and then clicked a bookmarked site on my bookmark toolbar. Firefox 21.0 closed the other 4 tabs and displayed the site I was attempting to open in the new tab. Why did this happen?

I have Windows 7HP X64 SP1, fully updated. Also have the trouble of not being able to update the Google Earth plugin that has not worked properly for the last week. The currently installed Google Earth Plugin is version 7.0.3.8542. February-26-13. When I clicked to check the plugins are up to date Firefox says the plugin needs to be updated, but the update button links back to itself and does not update the plugin. Interestingly it does not appear in the list Firefox automatically added below.

Are these 2 problems related?. I have scanned the computer with Avast Free latest version - full scan. And with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Sophos Virus removal tool. 2 days ago Avast Free put up a red warning that I had clicked an infected link and it had saved my computer from crashing. Also asked me if I wondered why I had an infected system. Nothing showed up in any of the scans, all 3 reported my system clean.

Chosen solution

The Google Earth plugin appears a GEPlugin in the System Details List.

Try to disable this plugin temporarily to see if that allows to download and install the plugin from the GE website.

Thank you so much cor-el that worked to enable me to update the Google Earth plugin. I disabled it in IE too before clicking the link just in case that made a difference. Then read further down on the page that I could have uninstalled it through programs and features. All working now.

As for the tab problem, seems my computer was infected with something. Yesterday after having problems logging in and my internet connection failing intermittently I booted in safe mode with networking and ran Combofix and it seems to have solved the other problems. If I could understand the report it spat out when it finished cleaning my computer I would have an idea of what the infection was.
