Why can't I read all 17000 emails in my saved mbox file on Thunderbird? It's only showing about 50 results but no more than that but the folder shows over 17000

The Thunderbird files show my aol email folders have over 17000 emails in it but I can only access about 50 of them. I thought I should be able to see more than just 50. Where are the others and how can I see more than 50 at a time?
