when I open Tbird on my macbook, it gives me an opening screen to pick an email and locks up

I just got a new MacBook Pro. I immediately downloaded Thunderbird, I made sure it was the latest version. when I open Thunderbird, I get the screen to choose my email. There are 3 choices: New email, old email and skip. None of them work. There is also no red "close" button available, nor is there help. Nothing else on the screen works. I have deleted and downloaded agains with the same results. Help
