I lost the "compose" box when I open my email box! Where did it go?

If I go to my email account and want to compose a message (rather than reply to an existing message), I seem to have lost the box I need to click on in order to compose a new message (and give the address). I can get there by clicking the little envelope with a padlock in the upper left corner, but I didn't have to do thatpreviously. Can anyone help restore what used to be readily available whenever I opened my email account, please? Thanks
