How do you "detach" attachments to old emails?

I have an IMAP gmail account which has reached it's quota and I'm trying to reduce size of my files. An article here suggested "detaching the attachments" from old emails. How do I do that?

Open the old email. On the bottom bar you should see the attachment(s) listed in the attachment pane, and at the right hand side of that there should be a 'save' button with a downward arrow beside it. Click on the arrow and a menu appears: 'detach' is one of the options. Or you can simply right-click on the name of the attachment: the same menu appears.
