How do I put Answers.com back in the search box drop down list in FF4?
My first question is about why I had to ask the second one in the forum: There are 250+ pages of "solved" problems! Not possible to read all that. If there is a forum search engine function to auto-search a particular filtered set of responses, it was not prominently placed. I should have searched those 250+ pages before asking my question. I didn't see an obvious way to do so.
My question:
I see that FF4 has dropped Answers.com in favor of Bing.
I had no trouble deleting Bing. But when I go to manage search engines in FF4 and list by 'name', neither 'Answers.com' nor 'Wiki.Answers' appears in the alphabetized list of 2,018 search engines available to add. It makes sense to add Bing. Answers.com had to go to make space in the drop-down short-list; I'm OK with that. But to erase it altogether so I can't easily put it back, that I don't understand. Wrong.
I don't want a separate add-on, I want the same Answers.com in the search box drop-down list that I had in FF3.6. Thank you.

You can enter any search engine in the "Site Name / URL:" box on this page and add the search engines available (i.e.: enter Answers.com):
See: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Search_Bar#Installing_new_search_engines
You need to update the following:
- Adobe Shockwave for Director Netscape plug-in, version 11.5
- Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape "9.4.2"
- Check your plugin versions on either of the following links':
- https://www-trunk.stage.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/
- Note: plugin check page does not have information on all plugin versions
- Update Shockwave for Director
- NOTE: this is not the same as Shockwave Flash; this installs the Shockwave Player.
- Use Firefox to download and SAVE the installer to your hard drive from the link in the article below (Desktop is a good place so you can find it).
- When the download is complete, exit Firefox (File > Exit)
- locate and double-click in the installer you just downloaded, let the install complete.
- Restart Firefox and check your plugins again.
- Download link and more information: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Using+the+Shockwave+plugin+with+Firefox
- Update Adobe Reader (PDF plugin):
- From within your existing Adobe Reader (if you have it already installed):
- Open the Adobe Reader program from your Programs list
- Click Help > Check for Updates
- Follow the prompts for updating
- If this method works for you, skip the "Download complete installer" section below and proceed to "After the installation" below
- Download complete installer (if you do NOT have Adobe Reader installed):
- SAVE the installer to your hard drive (save to your Desktop so that you can find it after the download). Exit/Close Firefox. Run the installer you just downloaded.
- Use either of the links below:
- https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Using+the+Adobe+Reader+plugin+with+Firefox (click on "Installing and updating Adobe Reader")
- Also see Download link': http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/
- After the installation, start Firefox and check your version again.
- From within your existing Adobe Reader (if you have it already installed):

Thank you! I am very pleased that your swift reply did indeed solve my problem quickly and easily. I now have Answers.com installed in the search box drop-down menu in FF4.
I am equally displeased that I had completed a full reply to your post and wanted to say that "My problem is now your solution #72." But when I hit the "Solved it!" button to see the increment post, my fully composed reply was wiped clean. Not fun!
I also think that Answers.com should be added to the list of 2,018 search engines that are listed alphabetically by name when you click "Manage Search Engines" at the bottom of the drop-down menu in the search box and then visit the "Get more search engines..." link on the "Manage Search Engine List" pop-up. It is ludicrous to provide a built-in means to add a search engine for a map of Vienna and leave out Answers.com which is a major global player and is still a pre-installed feature on most existing versions of FF.
Again thanks very much!

"But when I hit the "Solved it!" button to see the increment post, my fully composed reply was wiped clean! Not fun!"
Those 2 functions are independent of one another and either will reload the page. If you have entered a reply in the "Post a Reply" box, it will be lost if not posted before choosing anything else on the page. Either post your reply, then, after the page reload, click the "Solved" button or click the "Solved" button, then, after the page reloads, type in your reply and post it.
As for you question concerning Answers.com not being on the "Get more search engines" listing, please not that those are placed there by independent developers (developer name is just under each one). The page that I pointed you to ( http://mycroft.mozdev.org/ ) is made available by Mozdev Community Organization, Incorporated, a New York Not-for-Profit corporation ("mozdev") and that page indicates that they have over 23,000 search engines available.
Also note that the 2nd link in my post (Mozillazine) is an independent support forum with very knowledgeable people, as we have here (in fact some are active in both forums), and an extensive Knowledge Base library.
