How do I change what "bookmark this page" does

Sorry, there is no preference setting in Firefox to be able to do that, and I haven't heard of or seen an addon that adds that feature to Firefox.

The easiest way to save a new bookmark to the Bookmarks Toolbar is to click on the website image (favicon) in the URL bar and drag that image onto the Bookmarks Toolbar.
