This refers to Firefox version 80.01.1 (64 bit), on a Windows 10 platform, OS build 19041.450.

I tend to open pdf files in a new tab.

Later if I choose to download that file, I will paste the URL in the file as record.

Now with this version of Firefox, the URL is not shown with the pdf file, but rather a local drive temporary location! (e.g. file:///C:/Users/User/AppData/Local/Temp/recycling-02-00003.pdf)

This does not happen all the time, but at some sites, e.g. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwjWlPex8trrAhUh6XMBHf5bAbQQFjACegQIAxAB&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mdpi.com%2F2313-4321%2F2%2F1%2F3%2Fpdf&usg=AOvVaw3fTZswGqS5KjqCNjFbe2HE

How can I force Firefox to stop doing this? Thanks!

I think that this happens if the server sends the file not as "application/pdf", but as "application/octet-stream" or "content-disposition:attachment". The former opens the PDF file in a tab and the latter gives you a download dialog with the choice to open the file in Firefox and that causes the file to get downloaded in the temp folder.

Once downloaded you should see the file in the download manager and copy the download link via the right-click context menu.
