Why is Firefox using so much RAM?

I usually have 1 or 2 YouTube tabs open. At most, I'll have another extra tab. Despite me only using a few tabs, Firefox consumes ~1500 MB on average. Why is this, and how can I reduce it? Nothing taxing is happening, either. It's causing my fans to run audibly while I'm just watching a video.
