Whenever I click on something that's a PDF, Firefox keeps opening windows and starting partial download packets until I force quit... or until some time later it will crash itself.

You get tabs opening endlessly if you select Firefox as the application to handle a file when you get an "Open with" dialog.

You need to set the action for Portable Document Format (PDF) to "Preview in Firefox".
