After update my back button turned into a little white eliptical icon with a dot, although the forward icon is still an arrow. How do I get my back arrow back?

I have a MacBook Pro running Mac 10.12.6. I am using FireFox 55.0.3 (64-bit). I have been a long FireFox fan - one feature that I love that may be in jeopardy is the Tab Groups feature. It has set FireFox apart for me. At any rate, after the last upgrade I lost the icon for my Tab Groups and had to reset the menu and toolbars to gain access to it. I am not sure whether the back and forward buttons were affected by the upgrade or by my resetting to default the menu and toolbars, but now the forward button appears after I have gone back. It is an arrow and makes sense. However, the back button icon is this elongated circle with a dot in the middle. It makes zero sense, plus I can't tell when there is actually a page to go back to because it is virtually unchanged (actually, I stared really close and realized that the tiny dot in the center does get somewhat darker if there is a page to go back to). In it current state, FireFox is broken.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Thank you. After trying your suggestions I found that FireFox was fine in safe mode. After running through all the suggestions I found the culprit to be my beloved TabGroups. Any chance there is something similar to replace them? I have tried a few add-ons that were supposed to replace the function, but did not work a nicely
