If you change the password on sync, everything is flushed. This is a security feature.

In the event that the passwords information is lost, you should record all information in a separate text file somewhere else on your hard drive, or written down. You can easily copy and paste if you need to do so. If you are concerned about someone else looking at that file, you can compress it using a password.

These can't get your data back, but will help in the future.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backups of files that you choose.

Besides being a security feature, it's a maintenance feature, too.

Clearing all the user's data from the Sync server allows the user to continue using that same Firefox Account if or when their Sync data gets corrupted. Without that minor inconvenience the user would need to create a new Firefox Account using a different email address; how many 'user mistakes' before that user runs out of available email addresses?

Thanks guys. But sounds stupid that instead make backup in the cloud mozilla decided to transfer all data to cloud. If I would know that will happend I wouldn't play with that. Big minus for mozilla, thing to refine.

Sure, changing the Sync password would delete the data from the Sync server, but what happened to the data on the device that was originally connected to Sync?

Sorry for your loss of data, but Sync works as designed - not how a user might expect it to work. Overall, Sync doesn't "make backups to the cloud", its purpose it to synchronize Firefox data across multiple devices. Sadly, too many people don't bother to RTFM and don't use Sync as intended, resulting in the loss of their data due to mistakes like yours.
