After updating to 38.1.0 Tbird will no longer download emails from my two gmail accounts. I have another email account that works fine. When I look at the error console I see "TypeError: tab is undefined chrome://messenger/content/tabmail . xml" I also get a warning on the console it says "Use of Mutation Events is depreciated. Use MutationObserver instead. chrome://calendar/content/widgets/calendar-widgets . xml" And two messages one: Could not read chrome manifest 'file:///C:/Program%20Files%20(x86)/Mozilla%20Thunderbird/extensions/%7B972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd%7D/chrome.manifest'. And the second says: Could not read chrome manifest 'file:///C:/Program%20Files%20(x86)/Mozilla%20Thunderbird/chrome.manifest'. All three mail accounts are POP and I had no problems before the update to 38.1.0. I did receive a bunch of Microsoft updates yesterday as well. I don't have or use chrome and I don't use the calendar or messenger. Can you help? Thanks.

I strongly suggest using the account setting Google recommend.as a minimum.

Having said that, it is possible with Thunderbird 38 to authenticate using oAuth2 instead of Normal password. This means you do not have to enable less secure apps on your gmail account.

"Chrome" in this context refers to visual elements of the program. Nothing whatsoever to do with google's browser.

I don't think that any of your error messages are particularly unusual or significant.

A list of your extensions might be useful.

Here is the info you requested - The only extension I have is Lightning 4.0.1. I tried it with that disabled, nothing. Also fyi I checked for updates and found adobe reader out of date and ran virus and malware checks, nothing. I tried loading with add-ons disabled no change. I turned on all the plug ins and that didn't matter. I wonder if I should uninstall Tbird and reinstall it or try a system restore back to before the upgrade? Thanks!

Those are very unusual settings for Gmail. Where did they come from? I'd expect port 995 with TLS/SSL for POP on Gmail.

And why aren't you using Gmail's SMTP server for sending?

I used to have emails from a domain I owned and I remember that changes were made a couple of times under the direction of the providers because of issues with being spam blacklisted (not me - them). That is probably the same reason I was using the SMTP I am. That is all past, so if you think changing something might help or just make sense in general I'm fine doing so.

Thank you Zenos and Matt. With your advice and links I succeeded in getting my gmail to download again. I think the primary problem was that I did not have the incoming and outgoing servers utilizing SSL. But, at the same time I also changed the ports to the recommended ones. This issue did not exist until the upgrade to 38.1.0, but I must have been the only one that far behind the times. Anyway - fixed, working, and thank you.
