I would like to delete search engines I don't want to use because the method of unchecking them doesn't work. The other system allowed me to do this. Also, when I set a default search engine, it only lasts until firefox is turned off which I do several times during a computer session. Also, there is no easy way to tell which search engine is on unless I remember to check as the current search engine name is hidden.

Can you not just choose the name of the search engine you want from the search bar?

The problem is when firefox is shut down and restarted, the search engine I want not the one I chose and not even one that was checked as an acceptable search engine. I can't figure out how to make it stay on the one I chose.

The Search Bar in Firefox 34 is vastly different than it was in previous versions of Firefox. Please read about how it works - now. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/search-bar-add-change-manage-search-engines-firefox

If you select a Search Engine from the Search Bar drop-down - that Search Engine will be used just for that specific search - it is a OneOff search that you selected to do. You need to go into Options > Search to select a different engine to be the new "default".

You can revert to the previous Search Bar scheme like this.

Open up about:config (typed in the Location Bar) Right-click and toggle this preference to false

browser.search.showOneOffButtons

Then restart Firefox.

That page does not indicate that difference. The descriptions sound like what I am used to from older versions of Firefox and also current SeaMonkey. This is a quote from that page: "Note: The new search engine you select will remain active until you change it again."

Respectfully, the search bar in Firefox 34 doesn't work which is to say it sucks. You should be making things more user friendly but it seems you have worked to make things less user friendly. I don't have the computer savvy to fix things myself nor should I be expected to. You say I should only have to uncheck the search engines I don't want to display since there is now no way to delete the ones I don't want. I am now going beyond the default. I have unchecked google and others I don't want to use, but those unwanted ones are continually being arbitrarily put as my search engine. If there is no way I can resolve these issues on the browser, I don't have the Computer smarts to fix it. I have tried your so called fixes and am totally confused when I get to the website you direct me to. I'll continue to use Firefox for now, but if you don't respect those of us who are not geeks, I may have to rethink this decision.

knancy48,

Whether the new Search Bar scheme "sucks" or not; it is the way things are now. Fix it or not, your choice.

BTW, loading chrome://browser/content/search/engineManager.xul in the browser will show you the old Search Bar in a tab, allowing you to use the old "controls" without reverting the Search Bar to the old scheme. Save that internal address as a bookmark and use it as needed.

Also, KB pages have to be viewed in the browser and version that a support question is about; the content is automatically adjusted based upon the browser being used when viewing the KB article. Or the browser version need to be "tweaked" in the left sidebar to see the correct information.

The tweak under Editing Tools does not work, but reading the page with Safari does.
