just paste the link in the email. The recipient software should recognize the link as such.

Who is the email going to be sent to? Is it someone getting your emails and not seing clickable web addresses?

The emails are just standard , and are sent to various people . I haven't tried the solution yet . Thank you for your suggestion . I'll let you know what happens .

If you want to do a "fancy" link that looks like this then you need to compose using HTML, and you can use the Insert|Link option to see a helpful dialogue that constructs the link for you, asking for both the URL and the display text.

I'm afraid it didn't work

Using the insert / link didn't work. How do I use the HTML ?

more options

I'm using Vista OS and TB 31.0 .

I highlight some text in a new Write message eg: link to my website Insert > link

If I right click in the 'link Location' area and select 'paste', I see this error message: error message: "(No named anchors or headings in this page)"

If I put cursor in 'Link location' area and use 'Ctrl+V' then the url is inserted. So this second method works for me.

There is also another work around:

  • highlight text in a new Write message eg: link to my website
  • Insert > link
  • type anything (even a single character eg: 'X') into the Link Location field.
  • click on the 'Advanced Edit' button in that same window.

The 'Advanced Property Editor' window opens. select the 'HTML Attributes' tab if not already selected.

Click/select/highlight the line with the new link you just created - it will show this info

Under 'Attribue' it will say 'href' and adjacent under 'Value' , it will show what you typed into the Link Location field even if just a letter eg: 'X'

At the bottom right locate 'Value', it will also show 'X'

  • highlight 'X' and right click and select 'paste'
  • Click OK to close Advanced Editor
  • click OK to insert link

I still don't know what "it didn't work" means.

Note that in Thunderbird, links are not active in the Compose window. You need to save the message as a draft and view it in the drafts folder to see it as it would appear to your correspondents.

As of the last revision done yesterday (rev 31.3.0) the INSERT | LINK function no longer works properly. One can still link to an external image file BUT the dialog elements for linking an HTML page URL or email address are no longer visible. Please advise on how fast this can be fixed. Thank you.

ttocsmij re: the INSERT | LINK function no longer works properly

I'm using version 31.3.0 and have no issue. When you say no longer works properly' what do you mean? Please explain clearly the process you use and where precisely does it 'no longer works properly'.

Formerly one could enter an email address or a web page URL directly into the Link Location text box but now it only accepts external file links.

I experimented with this version (31.3.0) and found that one could enter a page URL by going to the Advanced Property Editor (which is ONLY enabled if one places a character in the Link Location text box) and manually editing the href attribute. Of course that requires that one knows some HTML because one has to specify whether it is a URL (http(s)) or an email (mailto) address.

This is NOT how this function worked before.

Before, one could type in OR right-click-copy a URL or an email address or an external file reference directly into the Link Location text box and TB would determine which protocol to use (ie, http, mailto, etc.).

I am not sure when this got screwed up since my heavy use of TB comes in the Spring and goes through the Summer but it will be a MAJOR PIA for me if it isn't corrected before February.

I presume you mean: In the Link Location text input box.

You can manually type the url. You cannot 'right click and select paste' to insert the url.

There is a bug report on this. You can add your vote : at the top of the bug report where it says:

Please note that it is not a chat forum - it is used by developers, so please only enter a comment if supplying new info like version number and OS.

All is not a total pain because whilst they review this issue: You still can paste the url by using Ctrl + V instread of right click option. so it is actually quicker to enter the url, which saves time if you do this alot :)
