I have set up my TB profile so that it is on an external SSD, but the program itself is on the computer. The reason I have done this is so that I can move the SSD from computer to computer (desktop to mobile laptop for example), attach the drive and access my e-mails using TB from different machines (each machine having its own TB installed).

I use POP3 to download my messages onto the SSD and periodically delete them from the Google server. This is why it is important to have only one data store for my e-mails (I keep them for years).

I have this working fine from my desktop, which was the original place I set up my e-mail. When I attach the SSD to my laptop and run it on the computer, I can see all my previously stored e-mails etc. but the connection to Gmail to download new messages doesn't seem to work. I do not get any error message, but neither do my waiting e-mails get downloaded, even if I explicitly request this.

My suspicion is that the issue is that I have 2FA on the Google login, and so TB can't access the Gmail server. I want to keep 2FA for security reasons. Is there a way of setting up (presumably unique) 2FA on both machines (presumably other than on the external drive) but so that each TB installation accesses GMail via its own 2FA, but stores and views e-mails from the external drive? Or is there some smart workaround?

TIA.

I'm on Windows TB version 91.10.0. Concerned that Google might cut me off if I was not using their recommended authentication, I looked up the issue and found Automatic Conversion of Google mail accounts to OAuth 2.0 Authentication. My account settings were still showing "Normal password", so I changed to OAuth2. That prompted me to log in with the Google dialog, but error messages in the Activity manager said that authentication failed. I diligently followed all the steps in the article, checking for disabled javascript or cookies and deleting the IMAP and SMTP passwords. No luck.

Then I tried deleting my account and recreating it. Auto configuration found setting for my workspace domain, showing OAuth2. The Google dialog popped up, and I entered my email and password, but the TB auto configuration pane showed that authentication had failed.

At that point, I switched to manual configuration and chose normal password, which had been working before. Again the Google authentication dialog popped up, suggesting that it was actually using OAuth2 anyway. This time everything worked. After an hour or two of research and experimentation, I was back where I started - should have left well enough alone.

Is there some setting in my Google account that I'm missing? Does Thunderbird use OAuth2 correctly even though the UI says normal password is selected?

It's June 24th 2022. I hope that Goggle doesn't shut me off in this configuration, because nothing else works, and I would have to quit using Thunderbird (which I've been using for nearly two decades).

I have multiple work email address with outlook.office365.com, and one of them just decided that it won't logon for me today, error reads as below:

"Sending of password for user jeffery@ausilk.com.au did not succeed. Mail server outlook.office365.com responded: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password."

prior to this issue occuring, I have not done any changes to my password or anything on outlook.office365.com and my login still seem to work on outlook.office365.com. Further more, my colleague who also uses thunderbird also encountered the same issue. However, this seems to only affect my thunderbird, and nothing else, my mobile device as well as outlook (windows mail) seem to work fine and can login using the same password.

I changed the password on outlook.office365.com and consequently on thunderbird and windows mail, and still, windows mail works, but not thunderbird. As a side note, my other outlook.office365.com mail box works absolutely fine with thunderbird, can send and receive with no issue, just this one, and it happened out of the blue. The last email I managed to receive before this issue occurred was at 11:30 am Sydney time GMT+10, as the next email that came into my inbox (on windows mail) was 11:37am Sydney time GMT+10.

Please assist, thank you.

It's my turn in the bucket. Thunderbird keeps asking for my password and then rejects it. I tried changing passwords, uninstalling Thunderbird and reinstalling, verified my settings and still this is an issue. I've looked at what others have tried, but none of it works. Help please, I don't like the Outlook platform.

I'm trying to add a new account with my student email that is basically a gmail with a different name. When I try to create the account, Thunderbird launches the website that asks for my username and email. That same website will accept my password when using a browser but when Thunderbird opens it will not accept it. I've checked several times, I've even copied the exact same username and password from the browser to Thunderbird and TBird says that it's a wrong password and it absolutely is the right password. I tried to cancel the process so that the account is created nonetheless but when I click on it, Tbird will still try to open that website and will not accept the correct password. Please help!

In the wiki on how to use an external GPG provider it says to use GPG4Win's bin_64 directory but this is no longer correct. The problem then is that Thunderbird doesn't know how to raise pinentry.

Today, with W10, Thunderbird 102 and GPG4Win 4.0.2 you cannot use a smartcard like a Yubikey by following the wiki: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:OpenPGP:Smartcards#Thunderbird_64_bit_on_Windows

As of this morning, I can't "get mail"... I get the "security exception" dialog stating the certificate belongs to a different site (which, it ALWAYS has) and giving me the option to permanently store the exception. Problem is, the exception IS already stored... it's just not WORKING any more. Certificate has NOT changed or expired, as near as I can tell... and this configuration was working for YEARS before this morning.

Hi, Yesterday I noticed problem with Thunderbird. When I try to add account (for the first time) i get a message "Unable to login at server...". The problem is, that ive checked each possible problem indicated by people on the Internet: - cookies set as "always turned on" - authorization method set as "OAuth2" - saved password - cleared - proper ports addresses - anti-virus app - disabled while trying to solve In fact, after I click "Done" (after i fill in NICKNAME/MAIL ADRESS/PASSWORD) in order to go to the authorization, the Gmail window pops up (that's great!). I can easily enter my email adress and password, but afterwards "Unable to login at server..." appears. The problem is not tied with THIS Google Account, emerges all the time, even for different accounts. I have no more ideas. Please help!

Hi

I've tried to search for a solution but couldn't find anything. I'm using Thunderbird 91.9.1 on Linux (Ubuntu), however I've tried this also on Windows 10 and exact same problem. I'm using the owl plugin to integrate to Microsoft O365 - that part works just fine. My problem is I've imported a gpg key and when I try to decrypt emails, the lower left bar just says "Loading message" but nothing happens - no error messages or nothing.

I can decrypt the same message using the same key with GnuPG on the command line, so nothing wrong with the key. I've also tried using an external key instead on importing directly into Thunderbird - same result. Is there any logging I can enable that would help me troubleshoot this, google didn't give me any good answers?

Grateful for any ideas. Regards Christian

I would like to know why, when Thunderbird first starts up or shortly thereafter, it attempts to connect to the following sites:

detectportal.firefox.com status.geotrust.com thunderbird-settings.thunderbird.net

It does not need to connect to any of these to send or receive email, so I would like to know why it's attempting to connect to those addresses. Little Snitch is blocking them for now but if one of them is important I can remove that block.

Also, at some point every day, Thunderbird complains that it can't get the latest version, and every day I have to dismiss that popup. I bring this up because it may be related to me blocking the connections but until I know what they are for I'd like to know if it is possible to make Thunderbird stop checking for updates.

They all concern me but the one that really concerns me is thunderbird-settings.thunderbird.net, first because it is listed as a bad address on one of the malware sites, and second because I don't want my settings being sent off my computer. Really the only reason I want Thunderbird to connect to the Internet is to send and receive mail, and maybe to check for updates if it can do ONLY that, and not send any other data from my computer back to the mothership.

My TB profile is on my home NAS, which has worked fine until I installed TB 102 (64-bit). Now when I enter my account password and check the Save Password box, login to the account fails and the password is not saved. I can access my accounts if I don't check the Save Password box.

I've tried deleting the key4.db and cert9.db files. While they are recreated, it doesn't fix the problem. There are no file called "logins*" in the profile directory, which I've seen mentioned in previous discussions of this type of problem.

I used Sysinternals PROCMON to try and get some idea what's going on; i.e., what files are referenced when saving passwords. I did notice repeated attempts to read key4.db at offset 24 , length 16 which always failed with NETWORK_ERROR. Other accesses to key4.db succeeded.

I have programming experience and am willing to use the Debugger under Developer Tools. I just have no idea what to look for.

Thnk you for any suggestions you can provide.

I am updating thunderbird for my gmail account logins for several machines. In security settings, I changed the authentication method from normal password to 0auth2 for incoming and outgoing servers. Upon initial login by thunderbird to gmail after the changed setting, gmail sends a verification window which requests your user name, password and authorization for gmail to allow thunderbird access to my gmail account. The windows 11, 10 and windows 7 (yes don't laugh) machines allowed for smooth verification. My windows ViSTA machine provided a gmail window for verification but it arrives blank - there are no written words or fields to fill out with my username, password or authorization - I am aware about "non support" for older operating systems but there must be a way to obtain data on the verification screen - windows 7 machines worked ok - what may be the solution for the Vista machine (a gateway desktop with who knows what chip that was the cat's meow back then). Don't want to trash the machine. All was OK until June 1st gmail compliance procedures. Thanks all.
