Firefox 76.0 64 Bit for Linux Mint 1.0 Mint 19 Cinnamon3.8.9

How can I prevent a single tab from closing?

I would like to prevent the keystroke Ctrl W from closing the active tab.

My understanding is that it is impossible to change keybindings in Firefox.

I thought an alternative might be to set Firefox to warn before closing a tab.

I had no luck in finding such an option.

Is there such an option?

If not, any other ideas?

On the entertainment media site Buzzfeed, clicking on a post of an embedded Twitter video gives me a blank white image. No error message like "Unable to play the file". I did a clear history, cache & cookies and refreshed Firefox. I ran the apt update for Ubunto. It had been operating smoothly in the past. If I go to Twitter, it plays. It just goes blank when I click on the video embedded in the post.

Thank you for any assistance.

Can Firefox "cast?" a video from my Linux Mint-Mate laptop to my ROKU ultra device using Ethenet-only connectivity- no wifi available.

Please be understanding . . . This is my first ever attempt to get help, and I'm not sure if I'm doing this correctly. I noticed that Firefox now has a channel-app on Roku. But I only connect to my Roku Ultra streaming device using Ethernet. The Firefox browser which I use is located on my laptop, running Linux-Mint-Mate, distro 19 and it's also connected only by Ethernet to my network: My Roku device and my laptop are connected to the same Ethernet-only home network. The reason I cannot use wifi is that my wifi is too slow - Router is 16/4 and I think I'd need a new, much faster router 32/8, or better. But my laptop is very old and it's unlikely it can transmit wireless signals fast enough for a reliable HD signal anyway . . . I would like to be able to send streaming videos from my laptop, to my Roku Ultra - to my TV. (It is not a smart TV - it's just an old Panasonic Plasma HD TV). I have an NBC Sports Pass Gold - Cycling Pass subscription account which (because of their app's. limitations) cannot play all of the available videos from its Roku channel app, because their ROKU channel app's videos are limited to just the most recent 90-day posted events. But all of the older videos from the earlier part of the season can always be played from their website, directly from my NBC account, which is located only on my laptop. -So this means that I can only watch these older videos on my laptop. My Linux operating system is running on an older HP Elitebook laptop with a duel-boot setup with Windows XP. If it is not possible to send these website-only videos across my network via Ethernet to my Roku Ultra device to my TV, could you tell me exactly what hardware devices etc. I would need to buy to do this successfully using wifi? My wifi speed to my apartment is very, very fast - it uses Comcast's fiber-optic service. Please note; I am only be able to follow very simple, step-by-step answers. I am elderly and I'm just a novice with computers etc. Thank you very much for any help with explanations, and options that I might have to accomplish this. Sincerely, DN24

Today I got what I've seen described as the "Facebook White Screen of Death". I've tried: Reload Clear Facebook cookies (which implies logging back in) Clear site data Restart in Safe Mode None of these things make any difference. Still get only a white screen. Facebook works fine in the Chrome browser and in the Android app, so it must be a Firefox-specific issue, in my case. This is Firefox 81.0.2 under Ubuntu 20.04 The problem only started today. I've used Facebook with Firefox for years without problem.

While hovering over the text of a link, the cursor changes into a hand. This has the effect, that i cannot select text from that link anymore, but instead, the whole link is dragged as if it were an image.

Not only the dragging is annoying, but also the form of the cursor, as i find it less precise.

How can i disable the changing into a hand cursor once and for all?

I'm running Ubuntu 20.10 with GNOME Shell extension Unite which can add the minimize, maximize and close buttons to the top bar and remove the buttons from the title bar of apps. The does not work in Firefox, minimize, maximize & close remain. I'm assuming this is related to Firefox's ability to remove the title bar all together so tabs can be at the top. The Firefox Customize... page allows you to change just about everything else in the UI except these three buttons.

Is there a way to remove Firefox's minimize, maximize and close buttons?

In case it matters I really only care about the Close button (not Close tab) because GNOME Tweaks lets you remove the minimize & maximize buttons from all apps.

Thanks

I spend 12+ hours a day in front of a computer and blank pages hurt my eyes. I use dark mode wherever possible.

I've changed the background color of about:blank already and it works as I expected.

However, when a request is fired to load a web page, there's a quick transition which may paint the canvas totally blank before starting rendering the requested page. Since this transition may take a couple of seconds sometimes in my environment, the screen flashes blank onto my face, really hurting my eyes used to most of things dark most of the time.

Is there a way to configure the color of this transitioning blank page, please?

Thanks a lot in advance. :-)

As of Firefox 75, the address bar plumps out in an "enlarged" state. This is a new feature of Firefox 75, announced here: https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2020/04/07/latest-firefox-updates-address-bar-making-search-easier-than-ever/

I'm wondering: how can I revert this back to how it was? I don't want it to plump out since it partly covers up the surrounding UI elements. I have a muscle memory for sometimes minimizing this bar with Escape, then clicking one of my bookmarks or one of the UI elements. I haven't had an issue seeing the address bar before, so this new feature is a detriment to me.

Thank you

Embedded videos at a particular website do not play in FF 80.0.1 (64 bit). My system is running Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS.

I have tried workarounds but none have provided a remedy. There could be a bug in FF causing this but I'm not sure.

Here is an example link: https://www.sbs.com.au/cyclingcentral/video/1788049475999/Winning-moment-Stage-14

This is the behaviour I see: After I click the play button in the lower left of the embedded frame the video begins to load. The beginning of an ad flashes into the video box but cuts out before playing. The video box is then loaded with the first shot of vision I wish to view but does not play.

I use four FF profiles with various modifications to improve privacy and security. When these changes occasionally cause problems with website function I try loading the website in a FF profile with reduced security/privacy controls. Modifications include changes to privacy and security settings, browser extensions and about:config changes.

Cascading through profiles with a step-wise reduction in the number of modifications still wouldn't permit me to play videos from this site. Even my vanilla FF profile with only a few UI tweaks does not play the video. After that I tried loading problematic pages in a brand new, freshly created vanilla FF profile to which no changes had been made. Videos still wouldn't play in a pristine profile with zero user modifications.

My internet connection comes via a smartphone mobile hotspot. The phone has a system level ad blocker running (Android phone, Blokada app) but switching it off did not allow the videos to play.

After that I tried a different browser. I installed Brave browser via Snap. Version 1.13.82 Chromium: 85.0.4183.83 (Official Build) (64-bit)

It played the video first time. Therefore internet connection to site is good. Did not load advertisement at start of video, no flash of ad content. When the video panel is loaded in Brave a large yellow play button is superimposed on the first frame of the video. The button is a yellow circle with a right-pointing yellow triangle inside it. Clicking the white play button in the lower left corner of the embedded video frame does not play the video. Clicking the large superimposed yellow icon initiates video play.

I'd be grateful for advice on how to rectify this problem.

I use openbox as my windowmanager with NO desktop environment on Archlinux.

I want to hide the titlebar (border) but when using openbox this option is NOT SHOWN. It is shown when i use another Desktop Environment like xfce4 or Gnome.

In the past i found out that a variable like DESKTOP_ENVIRONMENT, DE or XDG_SESSION_DESKTOP could be set with the value of another Desktop Environment to mislead Firefox.

However, i can't find the right variable any more and i have been googling and googling for days :-(

Please help, i like openbox & firefox (without titlebar)

Firefox 75.0 has just been released. Address bar has been ruined with dynamic size and lines with increased height. For some unknown reason Mozilla developers think that taking away more vertical space will help their browser have "Focused, clean search experience that's optimized for smaller laptop screens" as they state in the release notes. Outrageous.

Now tell me how to go back to the old behavior.

I want a full horizontal length search result widget as it was before.

I DO NOT want an ENLARGED address bar while searching. Simply annoying that it changes its size and looks like popping out from the upper top toolbar every damn time I type something into it.

I want the ORIGINAL LINE HEIGHT of search results in the expanded address bar.

I want an address bar that doesn't expand when focused with Alt+D, like the old one.

I haven't found an about:config option to restore old behavior. However, a userChrome.css workaround is still good for me.

Is there a way that I can change this setting in config rather than downloading an add-on? This changed with the most recent Firefox update for me (I'm currently on 85.0.1. for Ubuntu). Currently, the default save behavior is for bookmarks to save to the most recent folder you've picked. My preferred behavior would be for all bookmarks to save to "Other bookmarks" until I can file them away later.
