I have recently changed my googlemail password and saved the new one on Thunderbird. However, when I try to delete messages from either my all mail or draft folders they reappear again and I have to go into googlemail to delete them. I can delete from the inbox and sent folders (although I was prompted to enter the password for each of these initially, but I have received no prompts for the drafts and all mail. I do not want to change the settings regarding where these messages are stored.

Thank you very much for your helpful replies. I have checked all the settings and they were as you described. Deleting from All Mail is not important and can be done, if necessary, from Gmail. I have overcome the drafts folder problem by changing the destination folder to IMAP Drafts which allows me to delete from both Thunderbird and Gmail at the same time, which is what I needed. However, I still don't understand why changing my Gmail password should have caused the problem in the first place!

'All Mail' is your archive, a storage place for all the mail you've ever sent or received, but have not deleted.

If you delete a message from your inbox or one of your custom folders in your IMAP client, it will still appear in [Gmail]/All Mail.

Here's why: in most folders, deleting a message simply removes that folder's label from the message, including the label identifying the message as being in your inbox. [Gmail]/All Mail shows all of your messages, whether or not they have labels attached to them. If you want to delete a message from all folders, move it to the [Gmail]/Trash folder.

I presume you have subscribed to see the gmail Trash folder.

change the "Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings" for the mail account

under "When I delete a message: move to this folder -> [Gmail]/Trash. If you delete emails they go to the "Trash" folder under [Gmail] and should no longer appear in the "All Mail" folder at all.

You do not need to subscribe to see the 'All Mail' folder as it is just a copy of all of your emails, so it becomes a large folder and doubles the amount of disc space used. see section under 'all Mail' here:

Thank you for your reply. This was a helpful, but does not solve my problem. Before I changed my googlemail password I was able to delete mail copies in All Mail & Drafts on my Thunderbird account, but I can no longer do so. I have to go into Googlemail to do either of those things now. All Mail is not so important, but to be unable to delete the drafts from Thunderbird is a nuisance. I do not see why I should have to change the destination folders as the whole thing was working perfectly before the password change.

Do you have these settings for Trash and Drafts?

If no, then what settings have you got?

"Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings" for the mail account

under "When I delete a message: move to this folder -> [Gmail]/Trash folder on the gmail account

"Tools > Account Settings > Copies & Folders" for the mail account

under 'Drafts' select 'Other' and the Drafts folder on the gmail account

try this:

logon to gmail webmail Open the Settings in your Gmail account and choose the 'Labels' page. Make sure that "Show in IMAP" is selected for the [gmail]Trash.

In Thunderbird, use "File->Subscribe..." to review the folder subscriptions for your Gmail account.

If the label/folder is visible in IMAP, and is subscribed, you should be able to select it for Trash.
