Note that I have enabled "browser.taskbar.preview" in about:config ( can also do this via Tools->options->tabs ) - but I continue to get this useless "Mozilla firefox, Mozilla firefox, Mozilla firefox.." in the windows taskbar preview when I hover the mouse on Mozilla. Only the URLs of the active tabs are displayed - I need -all- the names of -all- the tabs - which has been the default behavior of Mozilla since Day 1 !!!! PLEASE FIX THIS !! ( or advise as to the workaround) Thanks !!!

Please be advised that the taskbar will only display each Firefox window, not the tabs. The currently selected tab on each window should display as the taskbar item's title.

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

FirefoxSafeMode

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode" Safe Mode Fx 15 - Win

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

Please report back soon.

Hi - that is precisely my point - in previous iterations, hovering on the taskbar Mozilla icons would show a popup of -all- tabs with -all- their names !!

In fact, what you have said below is not correct - since " Tools -> options -> tabs -> Enable taskbar preview " WILL INDEED show -all- the tabs but they are followed by "Mozilla Firefox" instead of the tab name ( whatever URL it is pointed to ).

One can get the same result also by setting browser.taskbar.preview.enabled TRUE in about:config.

It looks your answer is a bit canned -- so would appreciate insight from someone who WORKS on the tool ( V25.0.1 on Win 7 ) - or has a workaround !! THIS IS INCREDIBLY ANNOYING for Firefox to suddenly break a feature that has been around since DAY 1.

THANKS !!

Note I just want the names of the sites pointed to by -EACH- tab, not just those pointed to by the -ACTIVE- tabs ! The first was the default behavior when I'd hover the mouse over the Mozilla icon on the taskbar.

And again, "browser.taskbar.preview.enabled=true" - will give me -ALL- the tabs - but only the names of the ACTIVE tabs, the INACTIVE tabs have this USELESS "Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Firefox..." display !!

Would appreciate replies on this - it is pretty useless right now to see line after line that just says "Mozilla firefox, Mozilla firefox..." -- what I need is the name of the page ! Why did Mozilla break this ??!!

Hi v100x, do you have Windows 7 configured to show little thumbnail pictures or to display the list? On my system with a "Basic" theme, the list shows the tab titles in Firefox 25.0.1. (Screen shot attached)

Are the tabs with missing titles loaded? After a system session restore, the background tabs in each window typically are not loaded immediately, but instead are loaded only on demand. Wondering whether that could be a factor in your scenario.

hi jscher -as before, the names of the tabs do not show up ( except for the active tab in each Mozilla window ) - only "Mozilla firefox" shows up.

Again, this has to do with hovering the mouse on the Mozilla icon in the Windows taskbar, not the tab names in each individual Mozilla window ( what your screen shot shows) When I hover the mouse, only "Mozilla firefox, Mozilla firefox" shows up

As before - under Tools -> Options -- there is a 'preview browser in Windows taskbar' which I activated right away. But that does not give me the tabname !

Thanks, hoping to get this resolved ! Again, this was default behavior from day 1 , not sure why / how they changed it ! Pl fix ! Thanks.

Hi v100x, in my screen shot, I'm hovering the Firefox icon on the Task Bar and it is showing the titles of the 3 tabs (one active, two background) in the one Firefox window that I have open.

So I think mine is working the way you want and the way you remember that it has always worked. Is that right, or do I not understand the problem?

Could you try selecting one of the nonspecific tabs and then checking what happens on the Task Bar list. In particular, did another tab become nonspecific, or are both now correct?

Hi jscher - thanks for looking at this . What you have described i.e.

>> Hi v100x, in my screen shot, I'm hovering the Firefox icon on the Task Bar and it is showing the titles of the 3 tabs (one active, two background) in the one Firefox window that I have open. >>

..is exactly what I am looking for. ( Win 7, v25.0.1 ) And yes, as I reload pages , they do start appearing, so I'm assuming the default behavior is not to load the page.

Thanks for the debugging w/ rgds

Hi v100x, my hypothesis is that Firefox crashed at some point, and then upon restarting, Firefox restored your previous session windows and tabs. By default, when a session is restored, only the active tab in each window is reloaded, and the others are loaded on demand. I think that explains the unusual task bar list. I'm not inclined to crash my Firefox right now to test the theory, however. Anyway, I don't think you'll have any problem with newly opened tabs.
