Mozilla Firefox will not let any video to play

more options

Hi there:

All of sudden as of yesterday November 3rd, 2013 I can not play videos when using Firefox latest version.

It will either freeze from the start or play for 4 seconds and freeze. The videos play perfectly in other browsers. I uninstalled and reinstalled the latest Firefox, Adobe Flash, and Java. All cookies/cache/history cleared from Mozilla.

No virus/spyware/malware on computer.

Please tell me what happened and what can I do? The other functions are okay.

Computer is Windows 7 dual Core with Verizon Fios.

Thank you. CG

Please check if all your plugins are up-to-date. To do this, go to the Mozilla Plugin Check site.

Once you're there, the site will check if all your plugins have the latest versions. If you see plugins in the list that have a yellow Update button or a red Update now button, please update these immediately.

To do so, please click each red or yellow button. Then you should see a site that allows you to download the latest version. Double-click the downloaded file to start the installation and follow the steps mentioned in the installation procedure.

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

FirefoxSafeMode

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode" Safe Mode Fx 15 - Win

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.

You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

Then perform these steps:

  • Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
  • In the Firefox options window click the Advanced tab, then select "General".
  • In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
  • Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

Hi Computer Whiz:

Thanks for answer.

Computer did need an updated Silverlight plug-in but after installing and restarting computer issue remains. We even tried to disable hardware acceleration.

All the best, CG

Are there any specific sites that this issue will occur on or is it simply all video content?
Does this issue occur on any other internet browsers?

Starting in Firefox 23, if a secure page includes certain types of insecure content, Firefox blocks the insecure content and a shield icon will appear in the address bar. See this article for more information about the new mixed content blocker: Mixed content blocking in Firefox

To temporarily allow the mixed content to be displayed:

  • Click the shield icon Mixed Content Shield in the address bar and choose Disable Protection on This Page from the dropdown menu.

Fx23MixedContentBlocker

To allow insecure content to be displayed in all secure pages, enter about:config in the address bar and double-click on this preference, to toggle it from true to false:

security.mixed_content.block_active_content

You can also use this add-on instead, to toggle the preference:

You may want to do this only for the current session, then reset the preference back to "true" and check back with the site to see whether it's been fixed, since this is a global setting that exposes you on all sites, not just the one you care about.

Firefox would not all of a sudden think of YouTube and other sites as a security breach. Keep in mind I have access to the sites, it is only the inability to play the videos.

In addition acceleration turn off was tried in both Firefox settings/YouTube/Flash to no avail.

Something is being missed here. I have been waiting until somebody that is computer savoy to come over and we can try some of the more advanced suggestions such as SAFE MODE/Create a New Firefox profile.

Thus far nothing has worked and the fact other browsers are working perfectly is more perplexing.

Thanks,

CG
