If that doesn't work:

1. Type about:config in the address bar
2. Click I'll be careful, I promise if prompted
3. In the Filter input field type startup
4. Double click on startup.homepage_override_url
5. Delete the text string and click OK
6. Close Firefox and reopen the window to verify that it has worked.

When you tried How to fix preferences that won't save did you try to do that as the user that has the problem.

Normally all users will have their own profiles, and you will need to check the specific users profile.

Did you delete or (re)move the prefs.js file(s) in the profile folder of that user?

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

• Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder

It is possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.

Delete the files extensions.* (e.g. extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini, extensions.cache) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.

If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left side of the Search Bar (or click the "Find Updates" button in older Firefox versions) to do a compatibility check or see if there is a compatibility update available.

@Matt_G -- This solved my firefox is upto date page problem (one less window to close on start-up) Thank you for that and teaching me something new about Firefox (i.e. 'about:config) but still... checking for add-ons at every start-up

@John99 -- I did indeedy do it on the user profile with the problem because unfortunately it's me!! hehehe

@cor-el -- I deleted all extensions.* files but other than making me install all my add-ons again it still seemed to do nothing either =o( [edit] oh and I forgot to say the prefs file too

Firefox did tell me there was an update available earlier but I was in a rush and didn't have the time and if I could ask it to check for updates I would try that and see if it fixes the problem. Stupidly I told it to ask me later and I don't know how long it waits to ask again... Speaking of updates... it just literally came up in the corner as I type this message. Will try the 10.0.2 update n see if that helps.

So the update to 10.0.2 didn't solve the issue either. Wasn't really expecting it to... just hoping!

This is most likely an issue with that specific profile, so a Firefox update probably would have any effect, although you can be lucky that just the right files are reset and recreated.

Is there any security software installed that may restore files with file extensions like .js or .ini?

Some security software has virtualization features that can cause problems by protecting and restoring files in the Firefox profile folder.

I actually don't have any idea about that! I have Norton 360 v6 and asking their website about virtualization was a no unless they call it something different. (?) I had no problems deleting the files and I watched them re-appear when I started Firefox. Ugh confused... =oS
