Mozilla/Windows always asks which file to download the image into, and I get the download dialogue box appearing to show that it has been downloaded. But when I go that file to retrieve the image, it's not there, and I can't find it anywhere in the computer. This didn't happen always, but I'm not sure what has changed besides a couple Firefox updates.

Did disabling that scan work?

Your anti-virus software should still scan the file if you open the file or try to run the file if it is an executable. Only the automatic scan for new files that appear when Firefox is downloading the file isn't done.

It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files by Firefox.
Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.

See "Disable virus scanning in Firefox preferences - Windows"

How much danger am I in if I leave this scanning device disabled? I'm generally careful about what I download, but I don't want to provide a huge hole for viruses to enter.

Yes, it worked. Glad I'm not putting the computer in too much risk. I once did download an image with a virus and alarms went off. That is what I worry about.
